Civil Wedding in Abu Dhabi and Wedding Photography

The civil ceremony takes place at the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, commonly referred to as the Civil Court or Civil Marriage Court. The court has its own photography arrangements, and couples cannot bring their own professional photographer with a camera into the court. For that reason, I usually plan the main wedding photoshoot separately, either before or after the ceremony.

And this is not necessarily a disadvantage.

It means we can take our time somewhere beautiful, without trying to fit an entire wedding story into a short official appointment.

An Abu Dhabi park can be a particularly lovely setting.

Why choose a park for your wedding photos?

When people imagine wedding photography in Abu Dhabi, they often think of the skyline, the sea, luxury hotels or the desert.

But the city’s parks offer something different.

Greenery, palms, open paths and natural light create a softer and more relaxed atmosphere. There is space to walk, move and interact rather than simply standing in one carefully chosen spot.

We can walk together, talk, hold hands, stop for portraits, laugh and simply enjoy the day.

This is also where candid wedding photography comes into its own. Some of my favourite pictures are not carefully posed at all: a glance between you, a laugh in the middle of a conversation, the way one of you reaches for the other’s hand, or a quiet moment when you forget about the camera completely.

If you are looking for candid wedding pictures in Abu Dhabi, a park is particularly well suited to this style of photography because there is room for natural movement and genuine interaction.

Alongside the candid moments, I photograph the small details that make the day yours: the rings, bouquet, dress, shoes, hands and little moments between the two of you.

The result feels more like a story than a collection of wedding poses.

Before or after the civil ceremony?

Both options work beautifully.

If we photograph before the civil wedding, the day can begin with a quiet walk and a relaxed photoshoot. Afterwards, you can head to the court for the official ceremony.

There is something lovely about this version: you are dressed for your wedding, you know what is about to happen, but you are not officially married yet.

The atmosphere is full of anticipation.

If we photograph after the ceremony, the mood changes completely.

You have just become husband and wife.

You leave the court, take a breath, perhaps laugh about the nerves you had inside, and then go for a walk together.

The photoshoot becomes a continuation of the wedding rather than something separate from it.

This is one of my favourite moments to photograph because the formality is over. There is usually a wonderful sense of relief and happiness — and plenty of opportunities for natural, candid pictures.

What is a wedding photoshoot in an Abu Dhabi park like?

I do not build the entire session around complicated poses.

We usually begin with a few simple portraits so that you can get comfortable in front of the camera. Then we start walking through the park, changing backgrounds and light as we go.

If you want classic wedding portraits, we will make them.

If you prefer candid wedding photography, we will leave more room for movement and interaction. You do not need to know how to pose or what to do with your hands. I will give you simple directions when needed and photograph the moments in between.

The important thing is that the photographs still look like you.

A one-hour session can be enough for an intimate wedding story. If you would like more variety, outfit changes or another location, the session can be extended.

Wedding dresses in an Abu Dhabi park

A park works beautifully with both traditional and contemporary wedding outfits.

A white dress stands out against the greenery, while a long veil or flowing skirt creates lovely movement in photographs.

But there is no need for a traditional ball gown.

A minimalist dress, a modern suit, a short civil wedding dress or a second outfit can all work beautifully.

One of the pleasures of having a civil wedding in Abu Dhabi is that there is no need to follow a conventional wedding-day formula.

You can have a simple ceremony at the Civil Court, change into a second look afterwards and spend the afternoon taking photographs around the city.

The best time for wedding photography in Abu Dhabi

Timing matters when photographing outdoors in Abu Dhabi.

The midday sun can be very strong, so I usually prefer early morning or later afternoon, depending on the season and your schedule.

Morning light can feel clean and fresh, while the hours towards sunset bring softer and warmer tones.

The civil wedding can be planned around the photoshoot where possible.

For example, we could meet in the park in the afternoon, have the photoshoot, go to the Civil Court for the ceremony and finish the day with dinner.

Or we can do everything in the opposite order: get married first, then head to the park and spend the rest of the afternoon together.

There is no single correct way to do it.

Can we combine the park with another location?

Absolutely.

The park can be the main location, or it can be one part of a longer wedding photography route around Abu Dhabi.

After the park, we could continue to your hotel, the beach or the desert.

This can create a much more varied wedding gallery: greenery and natural portraits in the park, elegant photographs at the hotel and completely different images among the dunes at sunset.

But there is also something to be said for keeping things simple.

You do not need to spend your wedding day driving around Abu Dhabi simply to collect photographs in as many places as possible.

Sometimes an hour and a half spent walking together in one beautiful location is far more enjoyable than three hours in the car.

A small wedding can still have a complete story

Many couples choose a civil wedding because they do not want a large traditional celebration.

That does not mean the day needs to feel small.

You can still dress beautifully, have your bouquet, spend time together, take photographs, explore Abu Dhabi and finish the day with a lovely dinner.

There is no need for a wedding planner, a ballroom or a long list of formal traditions.

Just the two of you, a beautiful place and a few hours that belong entirely to you.

That is often exactly what makes these weddings so personal — and gives you the opportunity to have both beautiful portraits and genuine candid wedding pictures.
