Best Time for a Photoshoot in Abu Dhabi: A Month-by-Month Guide
People ask me this almost every week, usually while they are still deciding whether to book at all. They have a trip planned, or a baby due, or a birthday coming up, and they want to know if the weather and the light will cooperate.
The short answer is that Abu Dhabi can be photographed all year, but the experience is very different in January and in August. I have lived in the UAE since 2020 and have been photographing since 2009, and here is how I plan sessions through the year.
The short answer
- Best months: November to March, when it is warm rather than hot and sessions can run comfortably outdoors.
- Best time of day: about an hour before sunset, the golden hour, when the light is soft and the sand and sea turn warm.
- Summer works too, but it needs a different plan: very early, very short, or indoors.

November to February: the main season
This is when most families, couples and visitors want to shoot, and it is the easiest time to photograph outdoors. Daytime temperatures are pleasant, roughly mid-20s °C, and evenings are cool. Sunset comes early, around 5:30 pm in December, so the golden hour arrives at about 4:30 pm. That suits young children, who are usually at their best before dinner.
What this season is good for:
- Desert sessions. The sand is not scorching, and you can walk on the dunes for the whole hour.
- Beach sessions on Saadiyat or in other emirates. Early in the morning or an hour before sunset is the sweet spot.
- Long sessions with outfit changes and more than one location.
Two things to know. First, mornings can be foggy from December to February, which is lovely for some portraits but can hide a sunrise. Second, December and the national holiday weeks are busy, so popular evening slots go first. If you have a date in mind, ask early.

March and April: still good, a little hazier
Temperatures climb but evenings remain comfortable. The light is a bit hazier and dust can appear on windy days, which softens the sky. Sunset moves later, so you get more flexibility. I like this period for sessions that mix a city background with the sea. By late April, midday is already hot, and I move sessions closer to sunset.

May to September: summer
I will be honest: from June to September the heat and humidity are strong, with highs around 40 °C or more. This is not the season for a long walk in the dunes. Still, plenty of people shoot in summer, because that is when families are home, newborns arrive, or visitors have time off. Here is what works:
- Sunrise. Sunrise is around 5:40 am in midsummer. The air is cooler, the light is gentle, and the beach is empty.
- Short sunset sessions. Sunset is around 7:10 pm in June, and the last half hour is bearable. I keep these to about 45 minutes.
- At home or in a hotel. Air-conditioned spaces with big windows are a good choice for families with babies and for maternity sessions. Midday light through a window is often more flattering than outdoors.
- Light clothing and water. Linen and cotton, no heavy makeup, and a bottle of water for every child.
October is a transition month. It can still be hot in the first weeks and then becomes comfortable by the end of the month.

Which time of day is best?
- Golden hour (about an hour before sunset). Soft, warm and directional. This is my default for most outdoor sessions.
- Sunrise. Cooler and quieter. It needs an early start, but it is worth it in summer.
- Midday. Sunlight is harsh and straight overhead, which creates strong shadows on faces. Outdoors I avoid it. Indoors, midday is great, which is why I offer home sessions between 10:00 and 14:00.
- Blue hour (just after sunset). A short window of deep blue sky, good for city backgrounds and lights.

Ramadan, Eid and holiday weeks
Ramadan moves about eleven days earlier each year, so check the dates for the year you are planning. During the month, daytime life slows down, and public places are quieter. Many people prefer evening sessions after iftar, or sessions at home. Dress is more modest in public places, and it is considerate to avoid eating or drinking in public during the day. Around Eid and the National Day holidays, locations and hotels are busy, and photographers book up quickly.

FAQ
Is it possible to have a photoshoot in Abu Dhabi in summer?
Yes. Sunrise, short sunset sessions and indoor sessions at home or in a hotel all work well.
What is the best month for a desert photoshoot?
Usually between November and March. The desert is about an hour from the city, and the evening light is spectacular.
How long before my date should I book?
In winter, a few weeks ahead is sensible. In summer there is usually more availability.
Can we reschedule if it is too windy or hazy?
I try to keep that flexible. Message me and we will find a better day.
